The maternity ward and sun parlor, 1910. In addition to the nurses who helped to prepare the new mothers for child care, the Missionary Visitor, a Victorian social worker of sorts, was also present on the wards. She "makes daily visits to the Ward, sympathizing with the patients and doing all sorts of errands for them, writing their letters and visiting their families and helping them to get situations when they leave the hospital." Report on the Condition of the Obstetrical Department of the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania, 1910. Historical Collections of the Library, College of Physicians of Philadelphia
