Things didn't work out right for me in College as I continued to get low marks, so I went off and joined the Air Force in March 1978, much to my mom's dismay. Really, I wanted to get away from Vancouver and my mom's apron strings. (I had been in the Militia, 15th Artillery and was sent to the Montreal Olympics in 1976, selected to lead a group of 20 guys out of 120 who signed up.) Military leadership was in my life I guess as well I was selected as platoon senior over 120 guys during basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. My love to be a fighter pilot was dashed when my low high school marks didn't help/ Air Force recommended that I try being commissioned from the ranks (CFR) and go into Administration, as that was one of my major strong points. From Cornwallis, I went to Borden, Ontario, Camp Boredum...I mean Borden...for Administrative schooling. Back then there was no such thing as computers for individuals, and the only word processor was the drab kaki green Olivette typewriter.

Well in the fall of 1978 I was posted to the Royal Canadian Air Force Base at Cold Lake, in northern Alberta. Yeah, I thought the same thing "cold lake???" I asked for places around Vancouver, but for some reason, I got shoved way up north...we were on the 55th degree, same as Moscow's for a reference. But not as far north as Alaska! But Military life was good and a testing as one would see a lot of promiscuity, binge drinking and drugs. While up at CFB Cold Lake, I had won the national defense administration award for physical fitness, and also played on the Base Basketball team. We went to Winnipeg for the championships...I was one of the top scorers, but no, we lost the final game. The next year when I didn't play, but our team won the championship...go figure! |
